The residential and commercial building develops out of a focused observation of the direct vicinity, the specific geometry and topography of the property, the morphology of the Bitsch community, and also the wide-open perspective of the landscape and cultural characteristics of the Rhône valley. The building presents itself as a point building that is inserted into the village structure and refers, with its crystalline form, to the Alpine-dominated landscape. Inside, a multi-winged spatial figure unfolds, thereby providing daylight to the monolithic building, while also making contextual references. The choice of the surfaces plastered with lime putty revives a local building tradition.

Graber & Steiger is an architectural practice based in Lucerne, Switzerland and was founded 1995 by Niklaus Graber and Christoph Steiger. Their work to date includes public and institutional buildings as well as private houses. Graber & Steiger are interested in an architecture that gives a specific and individual response to each task assigned and that at the same time regards personal and subjectiv statements. A strong focus of the team is the search for powerful architectonical structures which approach the task in a targeted way and encourage an autonomous spatial expression. By winning various competitions, Graber & Steiger could accomplish among others the School Complex in Buttikon, the Window Factory in Hagendorn, the Panorama Gallery Pilatus and the extension to the Thun Panorama for which they received several national and international awards.

1st Price in Horw !

We are delighted to announce that our team has won the competition for a residential and mixed-use building in the centre of the municipality of Horw, south of Lucerne.
As the competition motto JANUS suggests, our approach is characterized by a multifaceted compound that responds subtly to the given heterogeneous context. The urban boullevard in the north is addressed just as the park-like open space towards the south.
The staggered and porous structure leaves maximum green space and accommodates a variety of apartment types, collective rooms and commercial premises that contribute to a vital a tivation of the neighbourhood.
The simple and robust structural and spatial concept enables a long life span while leaving flexibility for future adaptation. The deep, verana-like facade layers act as a climate-sensitive treshold space and expands the interiors multifunctionally.
